PowerFind is a powerful search engine that allows users to search many of the Omaha Public Library research databases and the Omaha Public Library catalog through a single search interface all at one time. Nearly all of the Omaha Public Library research databases are available in house or remotely using PowerFind.
Why aren't all of the research databases searchable through PowerFind?
Some databases rely on a browsing interface where there is no search function. These databases cannot be integrated into PowerFind. However, all databases may be accessed individually by clicking on the individual database name (or in some cases, the link for home access next to the database name if you are trying to access the database remotely.)
How do I search PowerFind?
It's simple! Type in your search term(s) in the search box near the top of the PowerFind screen. Then click Find! PowerFind will come back with the number of results found for your search term(s) in each database. From the results list, you can then click on the name of the database for which you would like to see the results. At that point you can view the results from the database. You will need to enter your 14 digit Omaha Public Library card barcode number to access the results if you are searching from home. PowerFind is set up to search all of the databases at one time, but you can deselect all of the databases and click in the checkboxes next to the individual databases you would like PowerFind to search if you don't wish to search all of them.
If I am not finding what I want with the Basic Search, what else can I do?
Underneath the Basic Search terms box, you can click on the Advanced Search link. This will bring up a search screen that will allow you to enter multiple terms and search multiple fields. You can also narrow the search down to full-text articles, peer-reviewed articles or limit by publication year. The Advanced Search will enable you to do a more specific search than can be done with the Basic Search.
I need to find databases that focus on business (or genealogy or health, etc.). How do I locate these databases?
Along the left hand side of the PowerFind page, you will see different subject categories. Click on the subject you are interested in, and PowerFind will take you directly to the databases in your area of subject interest. Then type in your search terms and Find!
