Omaha Public Library celebrates increased usage in 2013
January 23, 2014
In 2013, Omaha and Douglas County residents made incredible use of Omaha Public Library (OPL) resources and services. More than 2,372,350 million visits were made to the 12 libraries last year, making OPL one of the most visited organizations in the state of Nebraska.

OPL introduced several positive initiatives in 2013, and offered Omaha area residents a wealth of services and experiences. Increased hours were implemented across the system, adding nearly 70 hours per week for the convenience of OPL patrons. The eBook collection grew and an additional vendor was contracted to increase the variety and availability of downloadable digital books. OPL made more than 100 online magazines available to patrons through the introduction of Zinio e-zine service. The Common Soil Seed Library was introduced in March 2013 at Benson Branch, providing individuals with an interest in gardening and seed saving with access to a variety of seeds, as well as informative workshops on how to optimize growth and seed collection. OPL hosted visits from national and local authors throughout the year, including a visit from the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, Walter Dean Myers.

Participation in the 2013 Summer Reading Program saw 16,557 kids, teens and adults registering and tracking their reading using a new online system. Throughout the year, 180,394 individuals attended an OPL computer class, storytime, author visit or other entertaining and educational program. OPL membership reached more than 309,361 cardholders. Those individuals borrowed more than 3 million items, made 1.7 million visits to the OPL website, logged 818,120 computer sessions and downloaded 142,636 digital items, including eBooks and audiobooks, an increase of 45 percent – on trend with the growth digital materials have experienced each year. OPL gained a following on Facebook of nearly 5,000 people and more than 3,900 followers on Twitter, and provided even more ways to engage through social media.

OPL is dedicated to its mission to strengthen our community by connecting people with ideas, information and innovative services. The mission is experienced daily by those who changed their lives in a positive way with the help of OPL. Whether assisting someone in finding a job, providing an opportunity to meet a favorite author, or connecting with a family member divided by distance, OPL is proud to serve its community and grateful for the support of its members.
