Uncover your family history with help from Omaha Public Library

Omaha Public Library (OPL) is home to one of the largest collections of genealogy resources between Chicago and Salt Lake City. In addition to the many family history research tools available at W. Dale Clark Main Library, 215 S. 15th St., OPL will be offering a series of workshops at its Milton R. Abrahams Branch, 5111 N. 90th St., to help people at various levels of experience research their family tree. Workshops will take place each Tuesday, June 4-July 2, 6 p.m., and cover a variety of topics. Register for one or all of them online at omahalibrary.org

  • June 4: Tracking Your Ancestors. Learn how to begin your genealogy search. New genealogists will learn about helpful sources, software and records, as well as tips and tricks for making research easier.
  • June 11: Genealogy on the Internet. Learn how to find and use free genealogy research websites and online resources available at OPL.
  • June 18: Somewhere in Time. Use family postcards, letters and photographs to piece together your family's past. Learn how to research gaps in your family history and create an accurate family timeline.
  • June 25: Getting Organized. Learn how to download a Personal Ancestry File, store searches using software, and keep research in order.
  • July 2: Scrapping Your Family History. Learn how to scrapbook your family history and create a layout with your photos. Samples of heritage scrapping products will be available and a list of sources will be distributed. Sample layouts will be provided, and there will be time to work with your own photos. Bring your favorite scrap tools or use those available.
