The New Year's Winter Reading Club Features Jack London's "The Call of the Wild"

Jack London’s novel of the struggle for survival in a hostile wilderness is an unforgettable adventure. That novel is “The Call of the Wild” and it’s the featured book for Omaha Public Library’s annual Winter Reading Club, Jan. 4 thru Feb. 29.

The library is offering a new dimension to the Winter Reading Club with adventure-themed programs and through partnership with Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo for The Big Read. Presentations by an Iditarod competitor, a wolf trainer, and experts on the dangers and problems of dog fighting, as well as displays about the Gold Rush and the Far North will be among the highlights. Book discussions, film screenings, and an activity at the Wildlife Safari Park are also being planned.

Anyone can join The Big Read Winter Reading Club. It’s free and the rules are simple. Register at one of Omaha Public Library’s 11 locations. Read or listen to five Omaha Public Library (OPL) print or audio books including “The Call of the Wild” (get double credit for books over 500 pages). Track your reading and turn in your list to any OPL location for prizes including a Big Read tote bag (while supplies last), an opportunity to get photographed with a zoo animal on March 15 (show your Omaha Zoo membership or call Micki at 444-4844 for a complimentary picture pass), a Friends of Omaha Public Library book sale coupon, and a chance to win a $25 restaurant certificate or four box seat tickets to an Omaha Royals game.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The NEA announced this fall that Omaha Public Library is one of 127 organizations receiving a grant to host The Big Read celebration of a classic novel in 2008. It is the only library to partner with a zoo. The NEA launched The Big Read nationally in 2007 in partnership with the IMLS and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The NEA is making The Big Read the largest federal reading program in U.S. history.
