New Books, Old Favorites and Buried Treasures— Get Great Book Suggestions by Email

Omaha Public Library is excited to introduce a new email newsletter service called NextReads. No library card is necessary—just an email address—for library website visitors to subscribe to any of the 22 different newsletters that provide great reading suggestions. Fiction and nonfiction newsletter topics include Biography and Memoir, Fantasy, Mystery, Nature and Science, and Audiobooks, as well as two children's newsletters and one for young adults.

Depending on the topic, newsletters are sent on either a monthly or every-other-month basis and include up to 12 book recommendations each. Library cardholders can link directly to the library catalog from each book listed in the newsletters to place a hold or request a title immediately. Even library customers without email addresses can take advantage of the newsletters by viewing them online from the library or any Internet access point.

Executive Library Director Rivkah Sass states, “We see the introduction of the NextReads service as being an important part of our outreach to the community. Omaha Public Library will be better able to serve its many library customers who may find it difficult to visit our facilities in person to browse the shelves and book displays to find something new to read. Our newsletters will be our opportunity to bring the library to them—whether they are at work, school, home or on the road.” Omaha Public Library’s website omahapubliclibrary.org is considered a “virtual” branch of the library and is open 24 hours a day every day of the year.

Maggie Tarelli-Falcon, Interim Assistant Director, sees NextReads as a way to improve communication with library customers and the community at large. “Connecting our readers and listeners with books has always been a priority for us. Now we will be able to connect customers with all of our other resources and services—subscribers to the Mystery newsletter will be notified that our annual Mayhem in the Midlands Conference will soon be taking place; and those who are interested in Home, Garden, or Do-it-Yourself titles will be reminded that the library provides a great auto repair online resource.” Omaha Public Library currently hosts hundreds of events and programs each year and gives customers access to nearly 70 electronic databases and other resources.
