The Journey That Saved Curious George

Omaha Public Library presents “The Notable Artwork of Alan Drummond: The Journey of the Reys” in an exhibition of first prints from the book The Journey That Saved Curious George: The True Wartime Escape of Margret and H.A. Rey. View the exhibit in W. Dale Clark Library’s Michael Phipps Gallery, 215 S. 15th St. thru January 30. Drummond’s imaginative illustrations depict the travels of Margret and H.A. Rey during World War II. The display will also include Images of Curious George from the Reys’ archival collection housed at the de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection, McCain Library and Archives at the University of Southern Mississippi.

In 2005 Houghton Mifflin published The Journey That Saved Curious George: The True Wartime Escape of Margret and H.A. Rey by author Louise Borden and illustrator Allan Drummond. The book describes how Hans and Margret Rey, German-born Jewish artists who were living in France, escaped on bicycles as the Nazis invaded Paris. Leaving most of their belongings behind, the Reys took drawings and the manuscript of a mischievous little monkey named Fifi with their few other necessities. Their journey took them through southern France, Spain and Portugal, across the ocean to Brazil and ultimately to New York where Fifi later became Curious George.

The exhibit is sponsored by the Friends of Omaha Public Library and was produced by the Institute for Holocaust Education. Visit omahapubliclibrary.org for more information on Omaha Public Library events and exhibits.
