Library celebrates Black History Month

Black History Month honors the past and present achievements of African Americans. Established in 1976 by African Americans for the study of African American life and history, Black History Month is an expansion of Negro History Week which was established in 1926 by Carter Woodson. The theme for this year is “Carter G. Woodson and the Origins of Multiculturalism.” Omaha Public Library will observe Black History Month with the following events.

“AfrOmaha” a tribute to Omaha’s black population in honor of Black History Month. Digital art display presented by local artist.

Rev. Adam Clayton Powell Jr.
A Chautauqua performance by Preston Love Jr

Rev. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. was born in 1908 and died in 1972 after 24 years in the U.S. Congress and a distinguished career as a tireless fighter for the rights of the Negro. Although arrogant, confident and brash, he was the most dominant and effective Civil Rights advocate of his time.

Books will be given to children who visit the library. The book giveaway is sponsored by Friends of Omaha Public Library.
