Library promotes early literacy with a new book for each new baby

Babies born in 2008 will leave area hospitals with a gift toward literacy, thanks to the Omaha Public Library.  Recognizing that children begin learning the moment they are born, these Baby Reads gift packets will help babies begin that lifelong journey.  Each Baby Reads packet contains a board book, a nursery rhymes and fingerplay booklet, reading tips and a coupon to receive a second board book at any Omaha Public Library.

The newborn’s parents can allow Omaha Public Library to be a partner on their baby's journey by signing up for a Baby Reads library card.  It is similar to a regular library card, giving its owner the privilege of borrowing books, music, DVDs and Baby Reads literacy kits, with the added advantage of forgiving any fines that parents have accrued. Another plus - the baby’s card will not accrue fines for overdue children’s items.  All library cards provide unlimited, lifelong opportunities for information, education, inspiration and imagination. The more sounds, words and ideas a baby is exposed to, the better prepared the infant will be for a wonderful future ahead.

Funding for these Baby Reads gift packets comes from the Omaha Public Library Friends and Foundation. Visit omahapubliclibrary.org for more information about Omaha Public Library’s events and projects.
