DOUGLAS, 1890s

Douglas, 1896

Looking west from 13th & Douglas Street we see can see the area that would become known as “Theatre Row” in the 1920s in its infancy with the Ak-Sar-Ben Music Hall at 1309 Douglas. The Music Hall is located in the Caldwell Block. The Karbach Block is on the southeast corner of 15th. The large brick blocks indicate a thriving commercial area, although, on the north side of the street, beyond the State Hotel, some small buildings still exist. The building with the conical top is the Continental Block at the northeast corner of 15th. The Boston Store further west on the northwest corner of 16th & Douglas, was a newly erected four-story building built on the site where their previous building had burned.

Douglas, looking east from 16th Street

Looking east down Douglas Street from 16th we see people on foot, in carriages, and in streetcars, but not in automobiles. The conical topped building with the flag on top is the Continental Block located at the northeast corner of 15th & Douglas which provided office space for various businesses.
