COUNCIL BLUFFS & NEBRASKA FERRY COMPANY & UNION PACIFIC TRANSFER ALBUM6th Image |
The H C Nutt and N D Munson [built 1867, 165 tons, 137.2’ x 45.9’ x 4.3’] load freight cars at the foot of Izard Street in Omaha. Of particular note coming off the Nutt is Central Pacific’s Fruit Car 123 which helps date the image to sometime after May 10, 1869 when the rails east and west were joined and before March 1872 when the bridge was finished. The switch engine is a 4-4-0 of undetermined origin. One of the first through freight trains after the completion of the transcontinental railroad was fresh fruit from California. As the river channel moved the ferry landing changed and the both the ferry company and the railroad had to be flexible about relocating the tracks to accommodate the changes.
