Permanent housing for immigrants in early Omaha was often found in poorer areas of the city. Wooden apartment buildings or tenements were quickly put up to house large groups of people. These tenements were often located near major businesses.
Daily household activities such as laundry took place at the rear of the tenement.
Immigrant children often played in the yards behind the tenements.
