M. E. Smith & Company started business in Council Bluffs in the 1870s. The company dealt in wholesale dry goods, mainly women’s and men’s clothing. In 1886 M. E. Smith & Company moved to Omaha. By 1890 the company had moved from its initial Omaha location of 11th & Douglas to 11th & Howard, and by 1907 it had moved from there to the location shown here, the northwest corner of 9th & Farnam. In 1923 or 1924 M. E. Smith & Company went out of business.
