Dr. H. Link and Alfred D. Jones, Omaha’s first postmaster, appointed May 6, 1854. He also platted downtown Omaha in June and July, 1854. Jones operated out of Mr. Clancy’s “Big 6” provision establishment, which was a general store / saloon located on the north side of Chicago Street west of 13th every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday evening, shortly after the arrival of the stage. He also carried the mail in hat.
