KRUG BREWERY

1878?; sign for F. Krug, Omaha, Lager Beer on corner of Tremont House, 16th & Capitol Ave; sign shaped like beer glass & attached to corner of house

The gentlemen in this picture no doubt enjoyed the malt beverage advertised on the small, beer-glass shaped sign on the corner of the building. The beer advertised was that of F. Crug. Although his name was misspelled on the sign, Frederick Krug had a well established brewing business founded in 1859. At the time of this photograph, about 1878, Krug’s Brewery was located on Farnam between 10th & 11th streets. It was relocated in 1894 to 29th & Vinton Street near the South Omaha city limits. The large brick structure cost $750,000 and was one of the best equipped breweries in the country. Krug Brewery resumed operations in the Fall of 1933 after Prohibition. The company was sold to Falstaff Brewery in January 1936 but ceased operation in 1972. Several buildings on the Falstaff site were demolished in September 1996.
