Herman Kountze was one of the pioneer bankers of Omaha. Together with his brother Augustus, the First National Bank was organized in 1863 with beginning capital assets of $50,000. It was the first bank in Nebraska to organize under the new national charter. The Kounzte brothers were involved in a number of projects, most notably the Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition in 1898. After Augustus Kountze left Omaha, his brother Herman took over his home of Forest Hill. Herman remodeled the house completely. This beautiful home was located south of 9th & Pierce which at the time was considered the southern part of the city.
