Fort Omaha - 1890s

According to George Crofutt’s Trans-Continental Tourists’ Guide, published in 1871, Omaha Barracks was a destination point for the “fashionable pleasure seekers of Omaha.” An excellent carriage road to the Barracks led many to the area to witness the Sunday parade. He noted that the grounds had been planted with many trees “and in a few years, it will become one of the many pleasant places around the growing city of Omaha.” This image, taken in the 1890s shows some pleasure seekers seeking shade and shelter for themselves and their horses in the trees planted around the parade grounds.
