Creighton University was established in 1878 by Edward and John A. Creighton. Edward was an Omaha pioneer who wanted to found a free college for young men. Upon his sudden death on November 5, 1874, his fortune passed to his wife, Mary Lucretia, who made a $250,000 provision from his will to found the university. The College of Medicine was founded in 1892.
