Part-Time Police Officer
Hours: Must be able to work flexible hours (may include evenings and weekends)

Nature of Work: The work of this position involves a variety of non-patrol duties within the Police Department.  It involves duties in such areas as the Telephone Response Squad, Information Services Section, Crime Prevention Training, Police Training, Research and Planning, and Event Security.  An incumbents in this position will not be a sworn member of the department and will not carry a weapon.  He or she will perform duties with some independence and receive guidance from a superior.

Essential Functions: (Any one position may not perform all the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all the duties that may be performed in positions allocated to this class.)

  • Prepares police reports from citizens and officers calling into the Telephone Response Squad.
  • Assists at the front desk at Police Headquarters, including registering guns, processing requests for police reports, taking fingerprints, processing warrants, completing police reports, and processing other documentation as needed.
  • Prepares statistical reports for bureaus and units within the department.
  • Assists the Criminal Investigation Bureau (C.I.B.) with administrative duties such as making follow-up telephone inquiries and canvassing neighborhoods for needed information.
  • Assists in composing orders, designing training curricula, and providing technical research and systems application.
  • Provides security and non-patrol duties, including directing traffic, at such events as sporting contests, civil emergencies, and visits by dignitaries.
  • Assists with conducting training programs, within the department or on a community basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this description.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to learn and follow the Police Department's Standard Operating Procedures manual, general orders, and city, state, and federal laws.
  • Ability to complete precise and accurate reports.
  • Ability to operate a computer, typewriter, cash register, audio/visual equipment, and other office equipment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with community leaders, departmental personnel, and members of the public.
  • Ability to understand written and oral instructions.

Education and Experience: (The knowledge, skills, and abilities above may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience.)

  • Must be a retired police officer from the Omaha Police Department and must have been on retired status for at least six months.

Special Qualifications

  • Must be willing to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Must be willing to wear a uniform similar to an officer's uniform.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in an office setting amid normal conditions of dust, odors, fumes, and noise; however, an incumbent may be required to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Public Service Assistant : Part-Time
Salary: $7.50 per hour
Hours: Must be able to work flexible hours (may include evenings and weekends)

Nature of Work: This work involves serving the public and assisting in the daily operations of the Omaha Public Library.

Essential Functions: (Any one position may not perform all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all of the duties that may be performed in positions allocated to this class. Also, the duties are not necessarily listed in order of importance or frequency of performance.)

Assists with circulation tasks including checking books in and out, searching for claim returned items, searching for patron requests, processing reserved items, shelving items throughout the assigned location, and other related tasks.

  • Accepts money for fees, makes change.
  • Registers customers for library cards, explains library circulation policies to customers.
  • Renews library cards.
  • Answers library telephones, responds to basic inquiries and routes calls to appropriate staff or departments.
  • First line computer trouble-shooting (customer problems such as printer jams, selection of printers, cut/paste, etc.) and reporting machine problems to Technology staff.
  • Follows special procedures to clean computer monitor, keypad, mouse, and other peripherals.
  • Time watcher print queue management.
  • Monitors computer stations, print queues and computer management software.
  • May serve as computer contact for specific locations.
  • Assists in computer labs; teaches basic computer classes or works with the public one-on-one.
  • Provides directional or computer assistance.
  • Assists customers with copiers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with workmates and the public.
  • Ability to use and explain basic computer applications to the public.
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to use up to one hundred (100) pounds of force occasionally and lesser amounts of force more frequently to move objects.

Library Page: Part-Time

Nature of Work: This work involves assisting in the daily operations of the Omaha Public Library.

  • Sorts carts of materials for shelving; shelves materials.
  • Assists in the operation of the circulation desk including checking books in and out and other related tasks.
  • Processes correspondence and books to be sent by mail and packages non-print media.
  • Collects and checks in book drops.
  • Sorts and distributes incoming materials.
  • Processes reserved library items.
  • Delivers items to City facilities within walking distance.
  • Sets up for programs.
  • Cleans.
  • Accepts money for copies.
  • Assists with crafts and juvenile programs.
  • Searches for trace list, pull list, and claim return items.
  • Logs into work station computers.
  • Checks out customers (with no blocks or problems to resolve).
  • Collects gate count.
  • Pulls items for weeding.
  • Mends and repairs items, cleans disks/cases for items, covers new items.
  • Labels, covers, and stamps books.
  • Packages and mails out homebound items.
  • Meters mail.
  • Changes status of items as assigned.
  • Packages and mails out non-OPL items.
  • Spreads grit on ice/snow.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.

  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal system.
  • Ability to file books, periodicals, and other materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with workmates and the public.
